Understanding Crude Oil Prices
Crude oil is the world’s most actively traded commodity. Two main benchmarks dominate global pricing: Brent Crude (from the North Sea, used internationally) and WTI (from the US, used in North America). Together, they set the price for the vast majority of global crude oil transactions.
Oil prices are influenced by a complex web of factors including OPEC+ production quotas, geopolitical events, economic growth forecasts, seasonal demand patterns, refinery capacity, and strategic petroleum reserve levels. The US Dollar strength also plays a role since oil is priced in USD globally.
Prices shown on this page reflect futures contract prices, which represent the cost of buying crude oil for delivery at a future date. The front-month contract price is the most commonly quoted figure in financial news.
