Oil Market & Guyana
Guyana is one of the world's fastest-growing oil producers following massive offshore discoveries by ExxonMobil in the Stabroek Block. Crude is sold on a Brent-linked basis, transforming the small South American economy into a major exporter.
Classified here as a significant producer outside opec+, Guyana trades against Brent and WTI. That is the pricing reference the sections below work from — the headline Brent number quoted at the top of this page is the global marker, not necessarily the price Guyana settles at.
Fuel prices at the pump in Guyana
Crude oil is only part of what drivers in Guyana pay. Fuel duty, VAT, refining and distribution costs sit on top of the Brent benchmark. These pages break the pump price down component by component.
Oil Price in Guyana — FAQ
Where Guyana sits in the crude market
| Role in the crude market | Significant producer outside OPEC+ |
|---|---|
| Priced against | Brent and WTI |
| Refining capacity | Limited relative to demand |
| Region | South America |
| Pricing currency exposure | USD or USD-linked — no separate FX layer |
| Retail pricing regime | Market-set pump prices |
Guyana produces at scale outside the OPEC+ framework, so its output responds to price and drilling economics rather than to a negotiated quota. That makes it a swing factor the cartel has to plan around: when Brent rises far enough to make new projects work here, the supply response arrives with a lag and caps the rally.
South American grades are sold as differentials to whichever marker fits the destination — Brent for Europe and Asia, WTI for the US Gulf — so both benchmarks matter to the realised export price.
Guyana has only limited refining capacity relative to demand, so it exports crude and re-imports refined product. That combination is unforgiving: the country sells at a benchmark-linked crude price and buys back at a product price that includes someone else's refining margin and the freight both ways.
Crude is invoiced in US dollars worldwide. Where local prices are quoted in dollars or in a dollar-pegged currency, that removes one layer of volatility: buyers in Guyana face the crude move on its own, without an exchange-rate move stacked on top of it.
