Oil Market & Bahamas
The Bahamas has no oil production and depends entirely on imported refined products, though it is a major hub for ship bunkering and transshipment. Fuel costs on the islands move with Caribbean product premiums over Brent.
Classified here as a net importer, Bahamas trades against WTI, with Brent for waterborne cargoes. That is the pricing reference the sections below work from — the headline Brent number quoted at the top of this page is the global marker, not necessarily the price Bahamas settles at.
Fuel prices at the pump in Bahamas
Crude oil is only part of what drivers in Bahamas pay. Fuel duty, VAT, refining and distribution costs sit on top of the Brent benchmark. These pages break the pump price down component by component.
Oil Price in Bahamas — FAQ
Where Bahamas sits in the crude market
| Role in the crude market | Net importer |
|---|---|
| Priced against | WTI, with Brent for waterborne cargoes |
| Refining capacity | No significant capacity — imports finished product |
| Region | the Caribbean |
| Pricing currency exposure | USD or USD-linked — no separate FX layer |
| Retail pricing regime | Market-set pump prices |
Bahamas produces no meaningful volume of crude, so every barrel consumed has to be bought at an internationally set price. That makes the Brent benchmark a direct input into the trade balance: a sustained move in crude shows up in the current account, in the currency, and eventually in domestic inflation.
Product imports arriving from the US Gulf Coast are priced off WTI-linked refinery economics, while cargoes sourced from further afield are quoted against Brent.
Bahamas has no significant refining capacity, so it imports finished fuel rather than crude. Its pump prices follow product cargo quotations — which include the exporting refiner's margin and the freight for the route — so local prices can rise even in weeks when Brent is falling, if refining margins or shipping rates are tightening.
Crude is invoiced in US dollars worldwide. Where local prices are quoted in dollars or in a dollar-pegged currency, that removes one layer of volatility: buyers in Bahamas face the crude move on its own, without an exchange-rate move stacked on top of it.
