Oil Market & Lao People's Democratic Republic
Laos has no oil production and imports all of its petroleum products, though it is rich in hydropower. A landlocked Mekong state, its fuel supply chains track regional Brent-linked markets.
Classified here as a net importer, Lao People's Democratic Republic trades against the Dubai/Oman average and Brent. That is the pricing reference the sections below work from — the headline Brent number quoted at the top of this page is the global marker, not necessarily the price Lao People's Democratic Republic settles at.

Oil Price in Lao People's Democratic Republic — FAQ
Where Lao People's Democratic Republic sits in the crude market
| Role in the crude market | Net importer |
|---|---|
| Priced against | the Dubai/Oman average and Brent |
| Refining capacity | No significant capacity — imports finished product |
| Region | Southeast Asia |
| Pricing currency exposure | USD or USD-linked — no separate FX layer |
| Retail pricing regime | Market-set pump prices |
Lao People's Democratic Republic produces no meaningful volume of crude, so every barrel consumed has to be bought at an internationally set price. That makes the Brent benchmark a direct input into the trade balance: a sustained move in crude shows up in the current account, in the currency, and eventually in domestic inflation.
Asian refiners buy most of their crude on Dubai/Oman-linked term contracts from Gulf producers, and top up with Brent-linked Atlantic Basin cargoes when the Brent–Dubai spread makes that arbitrage work.
Lao People's Democratic Republic has no significant refining capacity, so it imports finished fuel rather than crude. Its pump prices follow product cargo quotations — which include the exporting refiner's margin and the freight for the route — so local prices can rise even in weeks when Brent is falling, if refining margins or shipping rates are tightening.
Crude is invoiced in US dollars worldwide. Where local prices are quoted in dollars or in a dollar-pegged currency, that removes one layer of volatility: buyers in Lao People's Democratic Republic face the crude move on its own, without an exchange-rate move stacked on top of it.
