Oil Market & Nepal
Nepal has no oil production and imports all of its petroleum, largely through India. Landlocked and reliant on Indian product markets, its fuel costs ultimately track Brent-linked regional pricing.
Classified here as a net importer, Nepal trades against the Dubai/Oman average and Brent. That is the pricing reference the sections below work from — the headline Brent number quoted at the top of this page is the global marker, not necessarily the price Nepal settles at.
Fuel prices at the pump in Nepal
Crude oil is only part of what drivers in Nepal pay. Fuel duty, VAT, refining and distribution costs sit on top of the Brent benchmark. These pages break the pump price down component by component.
Oil Price in Nepal — FAQ
Where Nepal sits in the crude market
| Role in the crude market | Net importer |
|---|---|
| Priced against | the Dubai/Oman average and Brent |
| Refining capacity | No significant capacity — imports finished product |
| Region | South Asia |
| Pricing currency exposure | NPR against USD |
| Retail pricing regime | Market-set pump prices |
Nepal produces no meaningful volume of crude, so every barrel consumed has to be bought at an internationally set price. That makes the Brent benchmark a direct input into the trade balance: a sustained move in crude shows up in the current account, in the currency, and eventually in domestic inflation.
Asian refiners buy most of their crude on Dubai/Oman-linked term contracts from Gulf producers, and top up with Brent-linked Atlantic Basin cargoes when the Brent–Dubai spread makes that arbitrage work.
Nepal has no significant refining capacity, so it imports finished fuel rather than crude. Its pump prices follow product cargo quotations — which include the exporting refiner's margin and the freight for the route — so local prices can rise even in weeks when Brent is falling, if refining margins or shipping rates are tightening.
Crude is invoiced in US dollars, so buyers in Nepal face two prices at once: the Brent price and the NPR exchange rate. A weakening NPR raises the local cost of a barrel even when Brent is flat, which is why domestic fuel prices in currency-exposed markets often fail to fall when the benchmark does. The reference rate used in the estimates on this site is 134 NPR per USD.
